How to open a LWO file

What is an LWO file?
LWO is the object format of LightWave 3D, the package NewTek built out of the Amiga-era Video Toaster. LightWave was a mainstay of television visual effects through the 1990s and 2000s — Babylon 5, seaQuest and a long run of series were produced with it — and a great deal of model archive material still exists in its format.
LightWave has always split its world in two: .lwo files hold objects — geometry and surfaces — while .lws files hold scenes, describing which objects appear, how they are lit and how they animate. An LWO on its own is therefore a static object, never a scene.
The file is built on the Electronic Arts IFF chunk structure, the same interleaved-chunk idea behind AIFF audio. Data is stored as tagged chunks, which is why the format survived several major revisions without breaking older readers.
Two generations are in circulation. LWO2 arrived with LightWave 6 in 1999 and is by far the most common. LWO3 came with LightWave 2018 and reworked the surface model. Very old pre-LWO2 files from LightWave 5 and earlier use a different layout that modern parsers generally cannot read.
LightWave surfaces are procedurally rich, with layered shaders and node graphs that have no direct equivalent elsewhere. Base surface colours and simple image maps translate; elaborate procedural setups will not survive the trip and are best rebuilt in the target renderer.

The questions we get asked most about opening LWO files.
Do I need LightWave to open an LWO?
No. The file is parsed directly in your browser, so you can inspect an object without a LightWave licence or installation — useful for archived assets and files handed over by a contractor.
Is my LWO uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to A23D or stored.
Why does my LWO have no animation?
LightWave separates objects from scenes. An .lwo holds only geometry and surfaces; lights, cameras and animation live in a companion .lws scene file, which this viewer does not read.
My surfaces look plain compared with LightWave. Why?
LightWave surfaces can be deep procedural node graphs with no equivalent in a real-time renderer. Base colours and straightforward image maps carry over; layered procedural shaders do not and generally need rebuilding in the target application.
My old LWO will not open. What is wrong?
It is probably a pre-LWO2 file from LightWave 5 or earlier, which uses a fundamentally different layout that modern parsers cannot read. Opening and re-saving it in a newer LightWave version produces a readable LWO2.
Can I convert LWO to OBJ or FBX?
You can convert to GLB, OBJ, STL, PLY or USDZ here. OBJ is the safest target for older pipelines; GLB is best if the asset is heading for the web.
