How to use A23D 3D Models in Archicad

This guide explains how to import 3D models downloaded from A23D into Graphisoft Archicad for architectural design and visualization projects.

Note: The import method depends on the Archicad version: Archicad 29 and newer can import FBX or OBJ as a GDL object, while older versions require conversion to a format Archicad can open, such as 3D DWG, 3DS via Goodies, SKP, Rhino 3DM, or IFC.

1. Download and Extract the Model

  1. Sign in to your A23D account.
  2. Browse to the asset you wish to use.
  3. In the Software dropdown on the asset page, select Archicad.
  • A23D automatically delivers the model in the format best suited to Archicad (.fbx) - no manual format selection required. Keep the .fbx file and texture files together because the model references its dependent files.
  1. Click Download and save the .zip to a known location on your computer.
  2. Extract (unzip) the archive to access the downloaded model package.

2. Import the A23D Model

Option A - Import as a GDL Object

  1. Open your Archicad project.
  2. Go to File > Libraries and Objects > Import FBX as GDL Object.
  3. Select the downloaded A23D FBX file and click Open.
  4. In the FBX Open Options dialog, enable texture import so Archicad saves the embedded material textures to the project's Embedded Library.
  5. Save the imported object into the Embedded Library, then place it with the Object Tool.

Option B - Open or Merge the FBX

  1. To open the FBX as a new model, use File > Open and select the downloaded A23D FBX file.
  2. To add the model to an existing project, use File > Interoperability > Merge and select the downloaded A23D FBX file.
  3. In the FBX Open Options dialog, enable texture import so Archicad saves the embedded material textures into the Embedded Library.
  4. You can also drag-and-drop the FBX into Archicad when that is faster for your workflow.
