How to use A23D 3D Models in ZBrush
This guide explains how to import 3D models downloaded from A23D into Maxon ZBrush for use in sculpting, detail projection, and character workflows.
1. Download and Extract the Model
- Sign in to your A23D account.
- Browse to the asset you wish to use.
- In the Software dropdown on the asset page, select ZBrush.
- A23D automatically delivers the model in the format best suited to ZBrush (
.obj) - no manual format selection required. Keep the.objfile and texture files together because the model references its dependent files.
- Click Download and save the
.zipto a known location on your computer. - Extract (unzip) the archive to access the
.objmodel and texture folder.
2. Import the A23D Model
- Open ZBrush.
- In the Tool palette, click Import.
- Navigate to the extracted
.objfile and click Open. - ZBrush loads the geometry as the active Tool. If the model contains multiple mesh groups, each group appears as a separate SubTool.
- Draw the Tool on the canvas, then press T (or click Edit in the top toolbar) to enter Edit mode.
3. Convert to PolyMesh3D for Sculpting
- In the Tool palette, click Make PolyMesh3D to convert the imported geometry into a fully editable ZBrush mesh.
- With the SubTool selected, you can now sculpt, paint, and add subdivision levels via Geometry > Divide.
4. Adjust Scale and Position
- Use Tool > Geometry > Position / Size / Rotate sliders for fine-tuned transforms.
- For multi-SubTool assemblies, use SubTool > Move/Resize with Edit > Transform active.
