How to use A23D 3D Models in Marmoset Toolbag

This guide explains how to import A23D 3D models into Marmoset Toolbag for real-time PBR rendering.

1. Download and Extract the Model

  1. Sign in to your A23D account.
  2. Browse to the asset you want to use.
  3. In the Software dropdown on the asset page, select Marmoset.
  • A23D automatically delivers the model in the format best suited to Marmoset Toolbag (.usd) - no manual format selection required. Keep the .usd file and texture files together because the model references its dependent files.
  1. Click Download and save the .zip to a known location on your computer.
  2. Extract (unzip) the archive to access the .usd model.

2. Import the Model into Marmoset Toolbag

Method A - Drag and Drop

  1. Open Marmoset Toolbag.
  2. Drag the extracted .usd file from Windows Explorer or macOS Finder directly into the Marmoset viewport or the Scene panel on the left.
  3. Marmoset imports the mesh and creates a Mesh Object in the Scene hierarchy, along with one or more Materials automatically.

Method B - File Menu Import

  1. Go to File > Import Mesh...
  2. Navigate to the extracted .usd file, select it, and click Open.
  3. Marmoset loads the mesh into the current scene.

3. Materials and Textures

When the USD imports, Marmoset Toolbag automatically creates Standard PBR materials with all A23D PBR texture maps already linked - albedo, normal, roughness, metalness, AO, and other maps are connected from the references embedded in the file. No material conversion is needed; Marmoset's Standard shader is already a full PBR metallic-roughness shader.

  1. In the Scene panel (left side), expand the model hierarchy to see the individual mesh objects and their assigned materials.
  2. Click a material name to open its Material Properties in the right-side panel.
  3. Confirm the Shader dropdown is set to Standard (the PBR metallic-roughness shader). If it shows a different type, switch it to Standard.
  4. Verify each texture slot is populated - Marmoset should have already linked the textures from the USD. Check: Albedo, Surface -> Normal, Microsurface -> Roughness, Reflectivity -> Metalness, and Occlusion channels.
  5. If any slot is empty, click the slot thumbnail and navigate to the texture in the accompanying texture folder.

4. Adjust Scale and Position

  1. Click the model in the Scene panel or viewport to select it.
  2. In the Transform section of the right-side properties:
  • Set Position (X, Y, Z) to move the model.
  • Set Rotation values to orient the model correctly.
  • Set Scale to resize if needed.

A23D models are built to real-world scale. If the model appears very large or small, the scene may have different unit settings. Use scale adjustments to match your scene's unit system.

  1. Use Object > Place on Ground (or manually set the Y position to 0) to snap the model to the scene floor.
