How to use A23D PBR Textures in Revit
This guide explains how to apply A23D PBR textures inside Autodesk Revit's Material Browser using the Appearance tab. Revit supports a practical native material workflow for color, gloss/roughness-style response, normal/bump relief, cutouts, and self-illumination. Full metalness, standalone AO, and displacement support depends on the renderer you use.
A23D automatically delivers a Revit-tailored texture set. Revit has partial PBR support: Color, Roughness/Glossiness, Normal/Bump, and optional Cutout maps are the reliable native material slots. A23D bakes ambient occlusion into the Color map for Revit because Revit appearance assets do not expose a universal standalone AO slot.
1. Download the Texture Set
- Sign in to your A23D account.
- Browse to the texture you want to use.
- In the Software dropdown on the asset page, select Revit. A23D automatically delivers a baked texture set in the format best suited to Revit (PNG maps) - no manual format selection required.
- Click Download, save the
.zip, and extract it to access the texture files.
2. Open the Material Browser
- In Revit, go to the Manage tab on the ribbon.
- Click Materials in the Settings panel. The Material Browser opens.
- Find an existing material in the list that matches what you want to create, or create a new one:
- To create new: click the Create New Material button (the document icon at the bottom left of the browser).
- Give the material a descriptive name.
3. Open the Appearance Asset Editor
- With your material selected in the Material Browser, click the Appearance tab.
- Click the small Edit Appearance Asset button (pencil icon) next to the asset preview. The Asset Editor opens.
- In the Asset Editor, check the current asset type shown at the top. Use a Generic appearance asset or a physically accurate material template when available, because it exposes the most predictable image slots for imported texture maps.
4. Load A23D PBR Texture Maps
Each parameter in the Asset Editor has a grey square icon to the right of it. Click the grey square to open the Texture Editor and load an image file.
| Revit Appearance Parameter | A23D Map to Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Color / Albedo (Image) | A23DTEX_Albedo.png | Click the grey square next to the Color parameter, select "Image", and load the Albedo map. The Revit download bakes AO into this map. |
| Roughness / Glossiness | A23DTEX_Roughness.png | Load into the Roughness image slot when using a physically accurate/PBR appearance asset. If your chosen asset exposes Glossiness instead, invert the roughness map or use the supplied gloss map if present. |
| Normal Map (Bump Image) | A23DTEX_Normal.png | Load into the Bump slot. In the Texture Editor, set the bump data type or pattern to Normal Map where Revit exposes that option. |
| Cutout / Transparency | A23DTEX_Opacity.png | Optional. Use for foliage, mesh fabrics, perforated materials, or other cutout/transparent surfaces. |
Renderer note: Metalness, standalone AO, height/displacement, and emissive maps are not consistently exposed in native Revit appearance assets. Use the matching Enscape, V-Ray, Lumion, Twinmotion, or D5 guide when those renderer-specific channels are needed.
Gamma note: Revit generally handles gamma automatically. However, if colors appear too dark or washed out, check your render settings for color correction. Normal and Roughness maps should be treated as linear/non-color data in renderers that expose explicit color-space controls.
5. Adjust Texture Scale and Tiling
After loading a texture, you can adjust its scale so it tiles at the correct real-world size:
- Click the grey square icon again to re-enter the Texture Editor.
- Under Transform, set the Scale values (Width and Height) to match the intended physical tile size.
- For example, a 1m x 1m stone tile material should have both Scale values set to 1000 mm (or equivalent in your project units).
- Enable Lock Aspect Ratio to maintain proportions, then click Done.
6. Apply the Material to Your Object
- Once your material is configured, close the Asset Editor and Material Browser.
- Select the object(s) you want to texture in the Revit viewport.
- In the Properties palette, find the Material parameter and click the small button next to it to open the material picker.
- Select your configured A23D material from the list and click OK.
- Alternatively, use the Paint tool (Manage > Paint or shortcut PT) to paint a material onto individual faces of imported geometry.
7. Preview the Material
- Switch a 3D view to Realistic visual style to get a real-time preview of the applied materials.
- For a final render, go to View > Render (in a 3D view), select Rendering options (quality, background, output), and click Render.
- If using Enscape, V-Ray, Twinmotion, Lumion, or D5, open that renderer's material editor for the final PBR-specific channel checks.
